Background:

Created in 1834, when local parish school amalgamated with 17th-century grammar school to serve burgh and valleys of Upper Annandale and Eskdale; small combined primary and secondary school also has nursery and support centre for children with specific learning difficulties. Well-equipped; enhanced by substantial recent developments; small classes. Curriculum supplemented by variety of educational visits to locations such as New Lanark and London. Many extra-curricular activities; football, hockey, athletics, cross-country, basketball, volleyball, netball, swimming, badminton, tennis, band, magazine, dance, mathematics challenge, chess and theatre trips all enthusiastically supported. School takes part in construction and pit-stop challenges as well as Dumfries and Galloway College Schools Games. Pupils with special needs participated in specially-organised swimming gala in Dumfries and won number of medals. Parent-teacher and friends' association holds social events to raise money for school; pupils encouraged to raise funds for charity.
